Domestic Missionary

I am a domestic missionary. But what is a domestic missionary anyway?

I had't heard of "domestic missions" before I worked with Global Passion myself. To be very honest, the title feels wrong to claim. In the sense that I had perceived a missionary as someone who becomes a foreigner for life, wears khaki all the time and struggles to live the "normal" routine. How wrong I was; but not about the title, rather, the definition I was using. A missionary is someone who goes to another place to advance the gospel.

Domestic missions does include the important work evangelizing in my home nation here in the States, but it also includes cultivating a culture of missions in American churches.

What you may not know is that there are hundreds of thousands of churches across our nation, but only a small fraction are engaged in missions. In fact,  if you look at right here in Northern California Assemblies of God district (my district area) there are approximately 13,000 youth students, but even in Global Passions best year we have only engaged less than 4% of those student in a missions experience.

I don't say those numbers to shame churches or missions organizations like Global Passion, it is a great accomplishment to have so many people say yes to advancing the gospel in there community and around the world. However, we cannot ignore the unengaged and not because I say so, but rather God does. 

"He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation." Matthew 16:15

Domestic missions is important also because there is a vast need for missionaries in our world. Today the average age of a missionary on the continent of Africa is 55 years old. This is important because at age 65 all missionaries are required to retire. Giving them maybe 8-9 years left on the field after their routine furlough, or process of fundraising in the States usually up to one year long.

Keep in mind this is only looking at a place that has missionaries while there are many countries that have yet to even hear the Gospel.

The great commission was made to all believers to advance the gospel. It's for this reason Global Passion exists, to send people to be Jesus around the world. We take people from the very first step of building a missions trip all the way through going with our teams.

As a domestic missionary I feel very privileged to be able to effect the culture of missions on many different levels. From conversations with young ladies in my church who are feeling the call of missions, partnering with the National Assemblies of God AIM trips, and leading trips to Panama for missions first-timers and seeing there faith rocked!

The "what" of missions changes drastically depending on where we are in the world, but the "why" never changes. We are about advancing the Gospel, to meet the practical and spiritual needs of this world, and love people by the power of Jesus Christ.
